I think one of the major reasons that Halo has such a legendary status, besides an amazing amount of pre-launch hype, is that for a whole lot of people, it was one of the first FPSs that they had ever played. With every generation of consoles, there’s a new audience being reached as they make system X or Y their first console, and the Xbox had a marketing vibe that made a lot of people hop onboard. The splitscreen multiplayer certainly didn’t hurt in a pre-Xbox live era either.

For someone like myself who had played (almost literally) every FPS that had been released on the PC up to that point, it was my first time playing a FPS co-op with someone since Doom 1.

I think the bottom line is that while maybe Halo isn’t the greatest FPS of all time, it still has a lot of things going for it that combined, make it one of the better FPSs there is. Personally I’d put it in a top 10 FPS list. Being an Xbox exclusive for 2 years gave it a concentrated and dedicated audience.

But I do agree that despite the copy and paste level problem of the first game, it remains a superior single player experience to the second one, despite a number of very cool moments in part 2, like watching the 8 story tall MAG guns fire into the Covenant armada, or boarding the Scarab and fighting your way into the control room.

I think I might have to pick up Halo 1 now as well.
